Silk Area Rugs

Silk area rugs, the most costly of area rugs, are made in many parts of the world, especially Asia. High quality hand made Persian and Oriental carpets are made in Persia, Kashmir India, central Iran, China, and Turkey. In India, silk is a valued fabric, which is used in spiritual rituals. The Indians have been hand crafting rugs for hundreds of years.

Silk, a natural fiber obtained from the cocoon of the silkworm, originated in China. It is a fibrous protein that is composed of amino acids five times stronger than steel. It has a smooth, light texture and can be used alone or blended with wool or cotton.

Silk is the most costly rug fiber, so even having a small percentage of it in your rug will make it more valuable. Higher-quality rugs, such as Persian area rugs and Oriental area rugs, often include silk for luster and shine.

Before You Shop For One

oriental area rugBefore you shop for a silk area or throw rug, you should familiarize yourself with the different terms and definitions:

  • Handmade: without use of any machine… constructed only by hand
  • Hand knotted: a weaver knots the yards around the warp yarns by hand.
  • Hand tufted: made the same way as hand-hooked, but with a cut pile surface
  • Hand hooked: the yard is inserted into a backing with a hand tool. It has a looped pile
  • Flat woven: usually made of cotton or wool, these rugs have no pile
  • Aubusson: has linear appearing stitches on the front and a stringy looking back
  • Knot count: number of knots in a square inch of rug
  • Wilton and Axminster: the two main types of machine looms used for multi-colored area rugs
  • Tufting machines: a US invented technology that, at times, replaces hand-tufting
  • Abrash: the variation in color is due to the dye bath or the natural silk
  • Field: the rug design, which is usually surrounded by a border

  • Where To Use Your Silk Rug

If you’ve decided that you want to use a silk rug in your decorating; under a glass dining table, on either side of a bed, or perhaps as a luxurious wall hanging, consider the following:

  • Silk area rugs don’t belong in high traffic areas, as they are easily stained, should be professionally cleaned, and are high priced.
  • Buying an area rug of silk will make it easier to spot clean.
  • Handle silk area rugs with special care and only have them cleaned by professionals.
  • While silk area rugs are often used as hallway runners, it might be best to consider doing so, only if your hallway access is not directly from the outdoors. It would be appropriate for an apartment, where shoes have been cleaned by a walk down a carpeted public hallway first!

How to Know if its Real Silk

As with most fine products, there are counterfeits on the market. To tell if you are really getting silk, try rubbing it. If it is silk, it will get warm. Or burn a few fibers…it will smell like burnt hair if it is real silk.

Silk area rugs or silk wool area rugs are good for defining a conversational grouping of furniture. Place the front legs of the chairs and sofa on the edge of the rug to create your space. Two small tables or one large glass table should be used for setting down drinks, plates, etc. In that way you are not hiding the beauty of your rug.

Don’t ever purchase a rug that is too small for the space. Small rugs are fine for stepping on when you get out of bed, in front of a chair or near a fireplace to accent your color scheme, or hung on a wall to draw your color and attention up.

So, if you’ve got the money and the eye for a silk area rug, you won’t regret your purchase, as long as it gives your space an excellent look and feel, and make you the envy of your guests.
