Area Rugs Runners

Area rugs runners are used in high traffic areas to eliminate wear on a floor, and on top of another rug or carpet, as well. They are great for stairs and hallways, too, when you want to hold down the noise people make, as they walk up and down, back and forth.

You will find them in many office buildings and on large estates. Rugs make a home look more spacious, and give people a feeling of comfort and coziness. They are very flexible in drawing attention to a particular area of a room.

A Brief History of Rugs

hallway rug runnerRugs have been used by humans for over 3,000 years. The first area rugs were probably made from animal hides, and later as people began to learn, they wove rugs using reeds. People soon learned to weave, and made looms that would make weaving much easier. A fairly large loom could make many different sizes of rugs. The width was limited to the size of the loom; however the length could be made as long as someone needed it to be.

The Dark Ages saw some very talented weavers emerge, as area rugs runners were ordered by the nobles for their castles. This made the weavers (rug makers) some of the most important and respected people in a village. Today, runner area rugs are manufactured by machine, as the mechanical looms are more powerful and faster.

Colors

Over the years, numbering in the hundreds, or even thousands, people have learned to dye the yarn they use to make rugs and area rugs runners. As a result, rug runners now come in a great variety. As weavers learned more about mixing colored dyes together and creating different colors and shades, it opened up a new avenue in overall rug manufacturing.

Designs

Weaver’s could now add many different types of designs along with the new colors. They learned how to put pictures on rug runners. By using different colors, a good weaver could depict the exact shades needed to make a picture appear more lifelike.

Themes

Many people have certain themes that they try to accent in each room; an area rug runner will help add the finishing touch to the room’s theme. Themes can be about anything you admire, such as the ocean, antiques, the outdoors, baby themes, and western themes as well as many that have not been named.

Color is also used as the theme of a room, or even of the entire home. If a person has a European theme, they can mix and match their rugs not only with European Designs, but also use rug runners that will match the European Era.

Sizes

Area rugs runners usually come in different sizes, such as 6’x9’, 8’x10’, 9’x12’, 12’x15’, and 15’x18’*. Large rugs are normally used in the living room and dining area of the home, but could make a good contribution in other rooms as well.

* Rugs may also be measured according to the metric system.

When you consider purchasing a rug runner, remember that some doors do not have enough room at the bottom to allow a rug to pass underneath. You should also look to see if the rug will be covering any vents or low electrical outlets, in some older homes.

It is not a good idea for the corner of the rug to stop at an opening, because people are likely to trip over it.

All things considered, though, area rugs runners are a wonderful, useful asset to enhance the look and feel of any room.
