What to Know About Area Rug Cleaning and Care

When you want to think about area rug cleaning and how to make sure the rug that looks so good today continues to look good tomorrow, you will find that there are several things that you need to consider. If you interested in cleaning area rug issues, or you are simply curious about what it takes to keep one of these lovely floor coverings pristine, you need to look into two areas: rug cleaning - and care.

Cleaning Your Area Rug

area rug cleaning - vacuumingRemember that rug cleaning is something that you have to undertake, if you want to make sure that your rug is going to look its best. Simply by taking some time in your cleaning schedule to see to these small, but significant, details can ensure that your rug looks great for years. In addition, thorough attention on a regular basis will help you keep your rug cleaning to a minimum.

Area Rug Cleaning by Vacuuming

Never, repeat, never vacuum the rug's fringes. Continued catching of the fringe in the vacuum cleaner’s suction causes fringes to break and tear. Do not use the beating brush when you vacuum your rug, either. You can either turn the brush off, or just use the attachments. Keeping rugs clean, and vacuuming them when necessary, is beneficial for them.

Rug Care

Handmade rugs can last for centuries in good condition, give remarkably long service, and age beautifully with proper care. Since prevention is the best "cure," following these recommendations will help you in taking good care of your fine rugs, and avoid unnecessary expense for additional rug cleaning. To make sure that you do not need to take more drastic action later, regular care can help in your cleaning of area rugs.

Area Rug Cleaning - Moths

The best way to control moths is by frequent moving, handling and regular exposure of your rugs to light and air. If you have to store them, then regular inspection at intervals is vital. Rugs in regular use are rarely in danger from moths. To repel moths, use moth crystal and/or Cedar wood balls, which are good moth repellents.

Area Rug Cleaning - Dampness

Depending on how it’s used, water is a rug's best friend and its worst enemy. Water is the best thing to use to clean an area rug, and general stain removal for most wool rugs that are colorfast. Beware, however, as continued wetness endangers any rug. Even long periods of dampness may cause the most colorfast rug to bleed colors.

This is not about not using rugs in an environment where they may get wet, such as the kitchen or the bathroom. It’s actually about making sure that you dry them when they get wet. You can use a hair dryer, on cold setting, to air dry them. When drying a very wet rug, be sure to comb the wet part in the direction of the overall pile of the rug.

Area Rug Cleaning - Damage

If your rug sustains any mechanical damage, such as a cut or burn, you must get a competent expert to deal with the damage, as quickly as possible. Such damage can worsen over time, if it is not dealt with soon.

Any locally worn or damaged place in the rug can be re-woven. Large holes are not a problem, and can be restored to make the rug almost as good as new. Choose only a local expert that has repair facilities available for the most effective and safe area rug cleaning.
