"Goodness! There are so many area rug brands!"

Don’t let the sheer number of area rug brands on the market overwhelm you – or worse yet, intimidate you. Familiarity with the more popular known rug brands will enable you to narrow down the field of your area rug selection.

Where did area rug brand names come from?

Most rug brands names are derived from the name of the family that manufactures them, their designer, their place or tribe of origin, or the company that sells them.

But, don’t let the floor rug brands names fool you. Each floor rug brand often comprises a variety of designs, styles, colors, shapes, and materials, which we’ll tell you about elsewhere.

Rug Brands from Founders' Names or Family Names

assorted rug brandsWhen an area rug brand is named after a founder or family, they are very likely manufacturers themselves, who have developed or upgraded their own techniques for producing fine rugs.

Many of these families are from countries like Iran (formerly Persia), Turkey, Iraq, and Pakistan. But they’re not the only ones.

When these families immigrated to the U.S., they brought their distinctive methods of rug-making with them, or kept in close touch with master weavers in the old country. At some point in time, they began importing fine rug products straight from the old country.

Some families showed great entrepreneurship by locating and marketing, under their rug brand name, the beautiful products of superior, but unknown craftsmen. They also combined machine-knotting and hand knotting in their rug making.

Others opened factories in the U.S. and adapted modern manufacturing and great design techniques to produce their own unique, excellent rugs for domestic buyers, and foreign buyers as well.

Their traditional skills and standards of excellence have earned them reputations and loyal customers. Their success bears testament to the quality, excellence, and desirability of their rug brands.

    Rug Brands from Company Names

In the past, many companies developed their own unique means of producing fine quality, though not handmade, rugs. As time passed, their products became linked with the makers.

These were not confined to an “old” country, either. In fact, some of them are “home grown” American companies whose founders made their name by producing fine quality products for the home market, at first.

Not only did they produce good rugs. They developed innovative ways to manufacture their fine rugs, as well.

Now, they can rightly and confidently claim to have overseas buyers, and have found their own market niches of satisfied customers.

So, rug brands named after their companies are also worthy of shoppers' scrutiny and consideration.

Rug Brands Names from Places of Origin or Tribes

Just as people long, long ago adopted the name of their hometown as their surname, so most Oriental area rug brands derive their names from their place of origin, namely city, town or village. In the case of nomadic items, it is from the weaver’s tribe. A rug made in the Persian town of Shiraz (Iran) is therefore known as a Shiraz.

A rug woven by the Belouch nomads (occupying eastern Iran through Afghanistan and into Western Pakistan) is called a Belouch. It is not uncommon for nomadic a rug to be known by both the name of the specific weaver’s tribe, or sub-tribe, and overall tribal grouping.

Small villages may also name their rugs for the nearest large rug producing town. Of course, that is provided there are strong similarities between their rugs.
